The Museum of Discovery and Science first began its history in the New River Inn in 1977. By 1986, the demand for this museum exceeded the capacity of the small complex it was located in. Due to the passing of the city’s General Obligation Bond, the museum was able to generate $13.6 million in philanthropy and $11 million in state funding. As a result of these investments, the new Museum of Discovery and Science and Blockbuster IMAX Theater was built and opened on November 21, 1992. In 2007, the IMAX Theater was renamed the AutoNation IMAX Theater. With increasing demands being met, in less than two years, attendance topped at about one million.
