Nach dem Trojanischen Krieg möchte der griechische Held Odysseus so schnell wie möglich zu seiner Frau Penelope heimkehren. Doch die Götter haben andere Pläne für ihn.
So ist er gezwungen, über die Meere zu irren und zahlreiche Abenteuer zu bestehen. Schließlich strandet er ausgehungert und ohne Gedächtnis im Reich des Königs Alkinoos. Kurz vor seiner Hochzeit mit dessen Tochter erlangt er sein Gedächtnis zurück.

In seinen Geschichten erzählt Odysseus von seinen Abenteuern. Er berichtet von den Sirenen, vom einäugigen Riesen Polyphem, von seinem unfreiwilligen Aufenthalt bei der Zauberin Circe. Er erinnert sich auch an seine Gattin Penelope und setzt seine Reise in die Heimat fort. Dort angekommen, muss er noch mit den aufdringlichen Freiern seiner Frau abrechnen, die sich in den Jahren seiner Abwesenheit in seinem Hause breitgemacht haben: Eines der berühmten Epen der Antike, Homers « Odyssee », diente dem italienischen Regisseur Mario Camerini als Vorlage für seinen spannenden, farbenprächtigen Monumentalfilm über die Abenteuer des bekannten Helden aus der griechischen Sagenwelt.

Für die Special Effects zeichnete der deutsche Spezialist Eugen Schüftan verantwortlich, der unter anderem auch für Fritz Langs « Metropolis » gearbeitet hat. In der Titelrolle brilliert Kirk Douglas, der zu den größten Hollywood-Stars der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre zählt.
