Visiting St. Martin in Sep (first time); Dutch vs. French side?

Hi, a couple friends and I are visiting St. Martin at the end of September. We’re trying to figure out where to stay that is centrally located and relatively walkable. We’re going for the beaches, hiking, going out, good eats, entertainment etc. Are there any significant differences between the French and Dutch side? Do people prefer one over the other?

Ideally we want to book an Airbnb but are open to resort options if it makes sense.

For transportation- is a car helpful to have on the island? Also, any recommendations for fun things to do, etc. are welcome 🙂
