Caribbean healthcare …what happens to patients between doctor visits?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a healthcare project focused on the Caribbean, particularly smaller islands such as Dominica, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua, and St. Kitts & Nevis.

I’m trying to better understand a specific problem: what happens after a patient leaves the doctor’s office?

For those of you living in the Caribbean or those abroad who help parents or relatives back home manage their healthcare, I’d really appreciate your perspective.

How well does the current system handle things like:

• Reminding patients about upcoming appointments
• Following up after missed appointments
• Making sure referrals to specialists are actually completed
• Following up on labs or testing
• Helping patients understand what they’re supposed to do next
• Managing ongoing care for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc.
• Keeping family members abroad informed when they’re helping coordinate someone’s care

Do clinics generally follow up with patients, or is most of the responsibility placed on the patient/family?

And for anyone working in healthcare in the Caribbean: what happens when a patient simply doesn’t return for the recommended follow-up?

I’m not looking to criticize Caribbean healthcare systems. I’m genuinely trying to understand where the gaps are and whether better patient follow-up and care navigation would actually be useful.

I’d especially love to hear from people from the smaller islands, healthcare workers, clinic staff, and members of the Caribbean diaspora who help manage care for relatives back home.
