Elle a été longtemps moquée avant de devenir un véritable phénomène. La Phryge, la mascotte des Jeux de Paris 2024 connaît un véritable succès à l’occasion de ces Jeux olympiques, après avoir été un temps renié par les supporters en raison de sa forme, considérée par certains comme un clitoris géant. Star des réseaux sociaux, la peluche géante a su conquérir son public en faisant le show dans les stades lors des différentes épreuves. Représentant le bonnet phrygien, la Phryge c’est avant tout un symbole qui se veut fort et rassembleur. Également symbole d’inclusion, sa version pour les Jeux paralympiques porte une lame en remplacement de sa jambe droite. «  Parce que le bonnet phrygien nous est familier, dans l’histoire, dans les arts, dans nos mairies et dans les écoles, il représente aussi cette identité et cet esprit français  », estime Tony Estanguet, le président du comité d’organisation.
Sur les réseaux sociaux, le phénomène ne faiblit pas. Preuve en est, le hashtag #Phryge est désormais surmonté d’un hashmoji à l’effigie de la mascotte, une particularité réservée uniquement aux phénomènes viraux.
