I have a school project that requires me to read a book based on the history of my family. I live in NYC and my parents are Indo-Guyanese immigrants.

The novel is preferred to be fiction or a biography or a memoir. It must also be relatively long (>200 pages). It can also relate to the history of another country, given the country has a similar history to Guyana (e.g. Trinidad). I’d also prefer the novel to be told by or be about an Indo-Guyanese, specifically.

Some topics I was thinking the novel could cover are:

• The Indian indenture system

• Life as an indentured servant

• Life in Guyana (prior to the modern day)

• The history of Guyana

But, if a novel fits the criteria of pertaining to an Indo-Guyanese’s history, and does not cover these topics, that is fine. Please give me a synopsis of the book.
