Hello all. I am a 24 (F) and I’m from Texas.

Basically, a few men that have tried to connect with me romantically have asked me “What Are You Mixed With?” And that’s a weird question to me because CLEARLY in black and a Texas native. I’m not mixed with anything.

So I began asking them, what do you think I’m mixed with? (Just to get an idea of what THEY SEE) and it’s always Caribbean

This guy I’m seeing now, said I look like I’m Jamaican. And then mentions how he has a thing for Dark Chocolate…calls me pretty and stuff. Keep in mind, he’s your average black American guy ..

I asked my Latino co worker. Do I look anything outside of black American. And he tells me I look like I’m from the ISLANDS.

One time on Instagram, i was messaging this South African girl about last extensions/getting her lashes professionally done. And she sent me a voice message to respond to me. She had a beautiful accent. I responded back to her using a voice message. And she replies “You’re American??”

IM NOT COMPLAINING! By any means. I understand black people are all around the world. They come in all shades and colors and backgrounds. But it kinda bothers me when people automatically think I’m Not Black American. It makes me wonder about my roots. My mom is from Texas and my Dad is from Florida. My grandmother basically moved to Texas with my dad (her son) and cut ties with her abusive husband (My dad’s Dad).

They are all from Florida, but I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MY grandfather’s side. I doubt my dad does either. He moved to Texas very young and my grandfather passed away many many years ago. My grandmother doesn’t keep in touch with her ex husband’s people either.

I spoke to my mom about it and she says my dad looks Caribbean to her.. But when I see my dad. I just see my dad LOLLL. Nothing exotic or distinctive about the way he looks.

Just yea, I’m not claiming an ethnicity or culture I’m not familiar with (if that makes sense). But then I feel WEIRD too like, whitewashed or “brainwashed” cause people are seeing stuff about Me that I don’t see? And then I’m not sure if it’s my skin color, my facial features, Or my hair that’s making people assume this about me. I’m always wearing braids. I love braids LOL.

Just idk, anyone been thru a slight identity crisis like this before? Has Anyone been called something they are not? In Texas we don’t have a lot of Islanders mainly just Hispanic, black, and white people for the most part from what I see. I’m born and raised here.

Thanks
