Jose Calugas and the 75mm Gun at Bataan WW2 Story

Jose Calugas was a mess sergeant, not a gunner, until a Japanese bombardment silenced his battery’s 75mm piece and he ran 1,000 yards under fire to save it. In the Battle of Bataan, the Filipino American soldier gathered volunteers, hauled the gun back into action, and kept firing until the Japanese advance was stopped. What began as a kitchen-duty moment became one of the most remarkable acts of courage in World War II history.

This military history story follows Calugas from the Philippine Scouts and Fort Sill training to the brutal fighting on Bataan, where artillery crews were being lost and every gun mattered. After the battle, he survived the Bataan Death March, Camp O’Donnell, forced labor, and later joined the Philippine resistance as a guerrilla fighter. His life is a powerful World War 2 documentary-style narrative about artillery, survival, heroism, and the first Filipino American Medal of Honor recipient in WWII.

Created for listeners searching for WW2 stories, military history narration, Filipino American hero stories, Bataan battle history, Medal of Honor stories, and historical storytelling with real wartime detail. A strong pick for history fans, war story listeners, and anyone looking for compelling battlefield narration and forgotten World War II history.
